Running Behind the Team

November 7, 2017

Mrs. Henngeler and the cross country team run strong today, although there was nothing at the beginning of her running career. For the last six years, Mrs. Henngeler has taken on the task to build the New Plymouth Cross Country team.

Before coaching Cross Country, Mrs. Henngeler coached volleyball, basketball, track and cheer, and she played volleyball back in her high school days. She was later asked to coach the runners of New Plymouth High. When she first started coaching, her team consisted of ten athletes and has grown to four times that with forty runners this 2017 running season.

When Henngeler was asked if the cross country team enjoy running she responded, “I’d say half and half. Some love to run and some are just there to get in shape or because their friend is there.” Everyone has their own reason to run. Henngeler pushes her team to give it their all everyday.

Running is not just a physical sport. Running also relies on having a strong mentality. There are definitely parts during practice or races where it gets hard and your body screams “quit!!”, but mentally you have to push yourself to keep going and finish the run. Henngeler knows the way to get all students, for whatever reason theyŕe there, to push themselves to be better in life, and cross country.
